August 29 marks the final events of the opening week of the "Castle of Light", National Library of Latvia's new building.

The Inauguration Ceremony of the Castle of Light concludes the chain of opening events throughout summer, making the new library building completely available for the wider public.

“I am glad that since the commissioning of the new library building, the library’s team has taken care of the library’s content and its values, by making open, creative space for human spiritual growth. The Castle of Light is not only a gift from world-famous Latvian architect Gunnar Birkerts to his native country, but a building of national importance, which was constructed in independent Latvia, and is an important national symbol,” highlighted the Minister of Culture of Latvia, Dace Melbārde.

During the summer, anyone had the opportunity to get acquainted with the new library building, use its reading rooms, as well as visit exhibitions.

The Inauguration Ceremony honors all who have participated in and supported the library’s project for 25 years. In cooperation with the Latvian National Library Foundation, the Wall of Supporters is revealed during the ceremony, which welcomes around 100 foreign guests. Among the prominent guests is also Birkerts’ family, the UNESCO delegation, representatives from 17 foreign National Libraries, and the leaders of IFLA – the global umbrella organization of libraries.

For the public, a special event Salasīšanās (in Latvian the word involves two meanings – gathering and reading together) is organized in the afternoon of August 29. Salasīšanās is bound to create an emotional tone among people, bringing the feeling of celebration to everyone participating in the festivities around the building of National Library.
