The Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) has elected Riga Graduate School of Law Prorector Mārtiņš Mits as judge to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

In a vote in which 191 PACE members participated, 122 PACE members supported Mits, 13 voted for the University of Latvia Professor Artūrs Kučs and 26 for the University of Latvia Professor Daiga Rezevska.

Mits has been elected an ECHR judge for a term of office of nine years. Judges are elected by PACE from a list of three candidates nominated by each country which has ratified the European Convention on Human Rights.

The previous ECHR judge from Latvia, Ineta Ziemele, resigned on January 1 this year in advance of the conclusion of her term in office - October 31, 2015, since being elected as a judge to Latvia's Constitutional Court.
