Rīga is the capital city of Latvia founded in 1201 by Bishop Albert following the Crusades, but the history of Rīga goes back to the 2nd century as initial settlers moved to the area. Today Rīga has developed into the key financial and trade centre of the Baltics. It is the cultural and political centre of Latvia, home to more than a third of the country’s population and the main driving force of the Latvian economy.
